Who Divided America More: Biden or Trump?
At a recent campaign fundraiser in Washington, President Biden underscored the urgency of the upcoming 2024 election, making a veiled reference to his probable rival, former President Trump. “The integrity of our democracy hangs in the balance for 2024,” Biden asserted. He called on voters to listen carefully to the rhetoric employed by Trump supporters, pointing out the divisive and potentially dangerous language being used.
He stated that both he and Vice President Kamala Harris have chosen to run again precisely because the country’s democratic values continue to be at risk. Biden pulled no punches in recalling past statements made by Trump, including the latter’s ambiguous stance on the Charlottesville protests involving white supremacists and his seemingly cavalier attitude toward extremist organizations. “We have numerous reasons to believe that Donald Trump is unfit to serve as President,” Biden emphasized.
This frank confrontation comes at a time when polls indicate a razor-thin margin between the two likely candidates, as Trump continues to solidify his lead in the Republican primaries. Biden used the opportunity to reiterate his denouncement of political violence, citing the egregious events of January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol as an example. He stressed that he and Harris stand united in sending an unequivocal message that political violence is intolerable in the United States.
Recalling his decision to run in 2020, Biden said the racially charged incident in Charlottesville, Virginia, was a catalyst that galvanized him to seek the presidency. He also mentioned that he consulted with his family before making this momentous decision.
Addressing the issue of gun control, Biden invoked a recent tragic event in Maine, where a mass shooting claimed 18 lives and injured 13 others. He questioned the necessity for civilians to have access to high-capacity firearms, saying, “Why in the world does anyone need a weapon that can contain, in some instances, as many as 100 rounds?”
Biden’s remarks serve as a clarion call for his supporters, underlining what he perceives as the existential risks facing the nation in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
