Trump Says Biden Is The Guilty One In Documents Case, You Agree?
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) remains resolute in his role in driving the removal of the previous speaker, Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), even amidst the turmoil in the Middle East, where Israel is engaged in conflict with the Palestinian organization, Hamas.
Gaetz had long expressed intentions to displace McCarthy from his leadership role, particularly after McCarthy’s collaboration with Democrats to prevent a government closure.
Speaking to CNN, Gaetz affirmed he holds no remorse over his actions against McCarthy, stating unequivocally, “absolutely not.”
He maintains his position even as the House finds itself in a deadlock, unable to initiate any new legislation that might aid Israel in its current conflict. However, Gaetz pointed out that, due to existing arrangements, the U.S. continues to automatically fulfill all of Israel’s requirements.
“Thanks to legislation previously introduced by Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, we’ve essentially set up an automatic payment system for Israel,” Gaetz explained on Saturday. “This means the administration is already empowered to address any request from Israel during this crisis phase.”
Looking ahead, Gaetz revealed that Republicans plan to nominate House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) as the enduring speaker in the coming week, readying themselves to “proceed with resolutions and support.”
Jordan emerged as the preferred candidate in a confidential vote on Friday, just before the weekend recess. This development occurred shortly after Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) — the initial nominee — withdrew upon failing to garner sufficient backing from his Republican colleagues.
With 152 votes, Jordan triumphed over Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga.), who had thrown his hat into the ring at the eleventh hour. Despite this, Jordan’s tally is still below the 217 votes required to secure the position.
Gaetz anticipates that the remaining undecided Republicans will ultimately support Jordan in the final vote on the House floor.
He mentioned that the vote for the speakership could have potentially taken place on Friday night, but it was postponed at McCarthy’s request, who suggested that Jordan’s family should be present for such a momentous occasion.
“In the end, it seems Kevin McCarthy and I concur on one thing: Jim Jordan is poised to be the succeeding Speaker of the House,” Gaetz concluded.
