Speaker Johnson Sees Cognitive Decline In Biden, Is He Right?
The presiding judge for Donald Trump’s upcoming trial concerning alleged attempts to subvert the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election, Judge Tanya Chutkan, has asked Trump’s legal team to weigh in on the media’s request to broadcast the trial. The deadline for Trump’s lawyers to submit their thoughts is November 10, in response to multiple media organizations advocating for live coverage of what they describe as a “landmark and unparalleled legal proceeding.”
While federal criminal trials typically are not shown on television, Judge Chutkan’s decision remains uncertain. The judge hasn’t yet clarified whether she even possesses the authority to permit live broadcasting, contingent upon the agreement of both Trump’s defense and the special prosecutors.
Up to this point, the downtown Washington D.C. courtroom has prohibited cameras during preliminary hearings in this case. However, NBCUniversal Media has urged the court to consider recording the proceedings for subsequent release, if live coverage is not feasible.
NBCUniversal Media stated, “Given the extraordinary public interest in this trial involving the former President, this is one courtroom drama that, if any, ought to be shared with the American populace.” Trump’s own lawyer, John Lauro, has previously expressed openness to the idea, stating it would provide a transparent view into the American criminal justice system.
The trial is set to commence on March 4, 2024, a timeline that could potentially clash with Trump’s speculated campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. In addition to this case, Trump and his sons, Eric and Don Jr., are in the middle of a civil fraud trial in New York for allegedly inflating their real estate assets to secure more favorable loans and insurance conditions. Furthermore, Trump is facing federal indictments for supposed mishandling of confidential information post-presidency and is also charged with racketeering in Georgia related to alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in that state.
