Senate Democrats Dismiss Dean Phillips’ Bid Against Biden: ‘It’s Puzzling’ On Monday, Senate Democrats largely dismissed Representative Dean Phillips’ decision to challenge President Biden in the primaries, questioning the timing and purpose of his campaign, especially when the party’s main focus is to prevent a return of former President Trump to the White House.
“I’m fully behind Joe Biden. In my view, he has done more to uplift the middle class than any other president in my lifetime,” stated Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, the third-ranking Senate Democrat. “I don’t foresee this becoming a significant issue,” she added.
Phillips launched his campaign over the weekend, targeting early primaries in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Michigan. The move has been met with skepticism by many in the Democratic Party. Some worry that his campaign could highlight President Biden’s vulnerabilities and fragment his support base, potentially complicating the upcoming general election.
Senator John Hickenlooper of Colorado echoed this sentiment, saying, “I don’t see a viable path for him to win. Drawing more attention to issues that the public already has concerns about doesn’t seem wise to me.” Hickenlooper further questioned Phillips’ objectives, stating, “I really can’t see what he stands to gain from this. It’s puzzling.”
Phillips, a three-term congressman from Minnesota and a former entrepreneur, announced his campaign in New Hampshire just over three months before the state’s primary and on the final day for candidate filing. While acknowledging that his campaign is a long shot, he has been complimentary of President Biden, stating that his campaign is “not against President Biden, who has my respect and gratitude.”
However, Phillips aims to differentiate himself from Biden, particularly on the issue of age. Biden is 80, while Phillips is 54. Phillips has been vocal about the need for new leadership, citing recent polls that indicate public concern about Biden’s age.
