Ivanka Trump Challenges Court Order for Testimony in NY Fraud Case
Ivanka Trump is pushing back against a legal directive to provide testimony in the ongoing New York fraud trial involving her father, former President Trump. On Wednesday, she filed an appeal against the decision that mandates her participation.
Her legal team’s appeal document is a direct response to Judge Arthur Engoron’s recent decisions, which ordered her to honor a subpoena. The appeal draws heavily on the transcript of last month’s hearing, where Ivanka’s lawyers attempted to persuade Judge Engoron, who ultimately ruled in favor of the New York Attorney General’s office.
The case, initiated by Attorney General Letitia James, alleges that the Trump family’s business operations involved manipulating asset values to secure tax benefits and more favorable insurance terms.
Although Ivanka Trump was excused from the lawsuit against the Trump Organization and her two brothers earlier this year, due to the statute of limitations, her lawyers contend that the New York court’s jurisdiction does not extend to her, citing her non-residency and her dismissal from the case.
Judge Engoron, however, held a different view, asserting that Ivanka Trump’s business activities in New York make her subject to the court’s jurisdiction.
The appeal to the appellate division of New York seeks a reevaluation of the jurisdictional argument and other key points, including the legitimacy of the issued subpoena.
