Trump Downplays Potential Testimony from Mar-a-Lago Staff in Classified Documents Inquiry

Early Friday, the former President Trump responded to a CNN report suggesting that employees from his Mar-a-Lago resort might be called to testify in a trial concerning the handling of classified documents. Trump, on his platform Truth Social, labeled the story as a “leak” from Prosecutor Jack Smith, whom he referred to as part of a group of “Radical Left Lunatics.” He acknowledged that staff at the resort did see documents, which he claimed were rightfully taken from the White House under the Presidential Records Act.

The CNN report mentioned that Mar-a-Lago employees, including a plumber, a maid, a chauffeur, and a woodworker, might be witnesses in the investigation into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified materials. The report, citing unnamed sources, also indicated that potential witnesses could come from Trump’s close associates and government officials.

Trump contrasted the scrutiny he is facing with the situation of President Biden, whom he accuses of having classified documents in various locations, including Biden’s home. He argued that Biden’s case does not fall under the Presidential Records Act as he was not the president when the documents were found.

The Presidential Records Act mandates a clear distinction between personal and official records upon a president’s departure from office. Over 300 classified documents were discovered at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in August 2022.

Trump also questioned the financial cost of the investigation into his actions, comparing it with the investigation into Biden’s handling of documents.

His trial is scheduled to start in Florida in May 2024, with discussions ongoing regarding a potential delay until after the presidential election. This has raised concerns among advocates who believe the trial should be completed before the next election.
