Trump Criticizes Spouse of Judge Presiding Over His Civil Fraud Case in New York
Former President Donald Trump has recently expressed his disapproval online towards the wife of the New York judge presiding over his civil fraud trial.
In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump suggested that Judge Arthur Engoron’s wife, Dawn Engoron, was behind an account that had been posting anti-Trump content. This account, identified as “Dawn Marie,” reportedly shared posts criticizing Trump and even displayed AI-generated images of him in an orange prison jumpsuit, as well as portraying him as the Wicked Witch of the West.
Trump accused Dawn Engoron of influencing the trial, referring to it as a “Witch Hunt Trial” against him, his family, and the Republican Party. He also implicated the judge’s law clerk in these accusations. However, Dawn Engoron has refuted these claims, stating in an email that she doesn’t own the Twitter account in question and has never posted any anti-Trump messages.
Judge Engoron, along with his principal law clerk, has been a consistent target of Trump’s remarks throughout the fraud trial. Before the trial started, the judge ruled in favor of New York Attorney General Letitia James, finding Trump and his organization guilty of fraudulent practices related to their business assets. This ruling has intensified Trump’s criticisms, especially on social media and even in court. He has repeatedly questioned the judge’s impartiality and has referred to him as “Trump hating.”
In one instance, during his testimony, Trump’s behavior prompted the judge to ask his counsel to control their client, emphasizing the legal nature of the proceedings over political rhetoric. Trump’s repeated criticisms led to a temporary gag order against him and his attorneys, specifically regarding comments about the judge’s staff. This order is currently under review by an appeals court.
The alleged bias of Judge Engoron and his clerk has been a focal point for Trump’s defense team, who filed a motion for a mistrial earlier this month, claiming it compromised the case’s integrity. However, this motion was dismissed by Engoron as completely baseless.
