Pelosi Labels Santos ‘Cowardly’ for Exiting Hall Prior to Concluding Expulsion Vote

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi criticized former Representative George Santos (R-N.Y.) for leaving the House chamber before the conclusion of his expulsion vote, labeling him as a “coward” for his actions.

Pelosi remarked that the decision to expel Santos, which resulted in a significant 311-114-2 vote, was a difficult yet necessary action. “This vote was taken with utmost seriousness, and he should have shown the same level of seriousness,” Pelosi stated to journalists post-vote. She expressed disappointment in Santos for not facing the situation with more fortitude.

She emphasized the importance of maintaining the House of Representatives’ dignity and respect, a standard she feels Santos failed to meet, particularly by his absence during the critical moment of the vote. Pelosi’s comments came after a series of failed efforts to remove the embattled New York congressman, who faced allegations of ethical breaches, including fraud and campaign finance irregularities. A recent report from the House Ethics Committee presented significant evidence pointing to criminal conduct.

Santos, now one of the rare individuals to be expelled from the House, has consistently denied any wrongdoing. He declared his intention not to seek re-election, yet refused to resign voluntarily, arguing that leaving would equate to yielding to pressure and bullying.

Pelosi praised the bipartisan nature of the vote. “This vote united members across party lines in upholding the House’s dignity,” she said. She described the process as sorrowful and emphasized its nonpartisan nature, noting that such actions are only pursued when there is substantial evidence.
