Republican Warns That GOP’s Impeachment Inquiry Against Biden Will ‘Definitely Backfire’
A Republican strategist has predicted that the GOP’s impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden will “definitely backfire.” The GOP’s investigation centers on allegations that Biden, during his tenure as Vice President under Barack Obama, interfered in and benefited from his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings in China and Ukraine. These allegations, denied by the White House and Hunter Biden’s legal team, have led to scrutiny from Democrats for lack of substantial evidence.
House Speaker Mike Johnson recently announced that a formal vote on the impeachment inquiry is scheduled for next week. He emphasized the constitutional necessity of this action for the effectiveness of subpoenas in court.
The White House has labeled the GOP’s impeachment efforts as futile and a waste of time. Meanwhile, House Republicans have introduced a resolution to formalize the impeachment inquiry, aiming to strengthen subpoena enforcement and designate open hearings in the investigation.
Lucy Caldwell, former campaign manager for 2020 Republican presidential candidate Joe Walsh, discussed the potential political consequences of this impeachment effort on MSNBC. She suggested that impeachment inquiries against a sitting president typically rally the base voters around the incumbent. Drawing parallels with the 2020 election, Caldwell noted that the impeachment inquiries against Donald Trump solidified his support among Republican voters.
Caldwell argues that this impeachment effort could serve as a “wake-up call” for Democratic voters, similarly rallying them in support of Biden. She expressed concern about the implications for democracy but sees a potential political advantage for Biden. Caldwell also mentioned the challenge for the GOP in balancing this inquiry with the demands of their core MAGA supporters, predicting that the inquiry could ultimately benefit Biden politically.
