Cheney Says Trump Lied To Americans, Is She Right?
Trump Reveals Details of Jack Smith’s Strategy
Donald Trump’s campaign team has strongly criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith’s request to the Supreme Court to decide on Trump’s claim of immunity from federal prosecution. They view this move as an attempt to impede Trump’s potential 2024 presidential run.
Smith urged the Supreme Court on Monday to quickly determine if Trump is protected from prosecution in a case related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, aiming to keep the trial scheduled for March on track.
The Trump campaign accused Smith, referred to as Joe Biden’s “henchman,” of trying to disrupt Trump’s presidential aspirations by hastening the Supreme Court’s involvement, bypassing the usual appellate process. They argue that Smith’s actions are a desperate measure and claim that the charges against Trump are politically motivated.
Trump contends that his actions surrounding the January 6 Capitol riot are covered by presidential immunity. He is charged with four felony counts related to conspiracy and obstructing the certification of votes on that day.
This situation follows the dismissal of Trump’s immunity claim by federal Judge Tanya Chutkan, who stated that ex-presidents do not have a permanent shield from legal accountability. Trump has appealed this ruling to the D.C. Court of Appeals.
As the trial date of March 4 approaches, Smith is pressing for a quick Supreme Court decision on the issue. Trump’s campaign argues that accelerating the trial unfairly targets Trump and his supporters. Trump is also trying to pause the trial until his appeal is heard, a move prosecutors see as a delay tactic, potentially extending past the 2024 election.
This trial is among four major criminal cases against Trump, including charges in Florida, New York, and Georgia, ranging from mishandling classified documents to alleged involvement in manipulating the 2020 election results.
