Trump Causes Stir At National Prayer Breakfast
President Trump took aim at Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) during remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington on Thursday, sharply criticizing the Kentucky lawmaker for his consistent opposition to legislation backed by Trump and GOP leadership.
Trump described Massie as an automatic “no” vote, arguing that the congressman refuses to support Republican priorities regardless of their substance.
“No matter what it is, no matter how good it is, he’s always against it,” Trump said, expressing frustration with Massie’s voting record. The president suggested that even widely supported initiatives would fail to earn Massie’s backing.
Trump went on to say that Republicans could package their top priorities into a single bill and still fall short of unanimous support because of Massie. He also likened the congressman to Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), another Kentucky Republican known for frequently opposing party-backed legislation.
Massie has long been one of Trump’s most vocal critics within the Republican Party. Since Trump’s return to office, the two have clashed repeatedly over policy and transparency issues. Massie notably pushed for the release of government files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and voted against the GOP’s sweeping One Big Beautiful Bill Act last summer.
The president has responded by backing a primary challenger to Massie. Trump has endorsed Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL, and has publicly encouraged him to challenge the incumbent congressman in the upcoming Republican primary.
The latest comments underscore ongoing tensions within the GOP, as Trump continues to call out lawmakers he views as obstacles to advancing his agenda, even within his own party.
