Trump’s Gas Prices Plan Leaks
President Donald Trump confirmed that he supports pausing the federal gas tax as fuel prices continue climbing during the ongoing conflict involving Iran and growing instability in global energy markets.
Speaking with CBS News, Trump described the proposal as a strong option for helping consumers cope with rising costs at the pump. The federal fuel tax currently adds 18.4 cents per gallon to gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon to diesel prices nationwide.
Any suspension of the federal gas tax would require approval from Congress, though the idea has attracted support from some lawmakers in both parties as Americans face increasing pressure from higher transportation and energy expenses.
The comments came shortly after Chris Wright said the administration is actively exploring every possible option to lower fuel costs. During a television interview Sunday, Wright stressed that officials are continuing to evaluate policies that could provide relief for drivers as prices remain elevated across the country.
According to the latest data from AAA, the national average price for regular gasoline remained above $4.50 per gallon on Monday, marking one of the highest levels seen in recent years.
Wright acknowledged that energy prices may stay high for an extended period due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East and continued disruptions to global oil shipments. He pointed specifically to instability in the Strait of Hormuz, a key passageway for international energy supplies.
Officials believe fuel prices could begin easing once commercial shipping traffic through the strait fully resumes. However, analysts caution that global oil markets may take months to stabilize even if tensions between the United States and Iran begin to cool.
Trump has repeatedly argued that the spike in prices is temporary and has maintained that the economy will recover once military operations and negotiations in the region are resolved.
Several states have already taken action independently by temporarily suspending state-level gas taxes to help residents manage higher fuel expenses. Georgia and Indiana are among the states that introduced temporary fuel tax relief measures earlier this year.
As Americans continue to deal with rising living costs, energy prices are expected to remain a major political issue heading into upcoming elections, with lawmakers under increasing pressure to deliver immediate economic relief.
