Trump Accused Of Doing What At Soccer World Cup?
President Trump’s involvement in FIFA’s decision to overturn Team USA striker Folarin Balogun’s red card has sparked controversy across the soccer world ahead of Monday night’s World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium national football team.
FIFA’s independent disciplinary panel reversed Balogun’s one-match suspension on Sunday. It was later revealed that Trump had contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino, with whom he has appeared publicly several times over the past year. Belgium appealed the decision Monday, but FIFA rejected the challenge.
Speaking Monday morning, Trump said he reached out to Infantino because “I didn’t think it was a foul,” while insisting he “didn’t tell him what to do” regarding Balogun’s suspension.
The decision drew criticism from Belgium and several figures within international soccer, with opponents questioning the ruling and raising concerns about the sport’s governance. Europe’s governing soccer body also criticized the reversal, calling the decision “incomprehensible.”
Team USA is scheduled to face Belgium at 8 p.m. Monday in Seattle.
Separately, the Trump administration officially launched the new Trump Accounts investment program Monday at the White House after accounts became available over the weekend. Business leaders, including Michael Dell and Susan Dell, attended the event alongside executives from the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq as Trump rang the opening bell from Washington.
Following the Independence Day celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary, Trump is expected to travel to Ankara for the upcoming NATO Summit, where meetings are expected with Volodymyr Zelensky and Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Elsewhere, a preliminary hearing begins Monday in Utah in the murder case involving conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Prosecutors are expected to present evidence as they seek to move the case toward trial, with Kirk’s family expected to attend proceedings alongside defendant Tyler Robinson.
Congress remains in recess this week, though House Speaker Mike Johnson has said he plans to push for passage of the SAVE America Act through the budget reconciliation process when lawmakers return.
