Americans are once again paying more at the pump as the national average price for gasoline climbed back above $4 per gallon on Monday, according to AAA, amid renewed fighting between the United States and Iran.
The increase follows weeks of rising tensions in the Middle East, where military operations have intensified and concerns over global oil supplies continue to grow. Energy markets have reacted to the renewed conflict, particularly as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz faces increasing disruption.
The national average reached $4.00 per gallon after briefly falling below that level last month, providing motorists with temporary relief following months of elevated fuel prices. Although current prices remain below recent peak levels, they are approximately 86 cents higher than they were at the same time last year.
Higher gasoline prices have become a key economic issue for many households, with previous surveys showing that rising fuel costs heavily influence Americans’ views of the broader economy. Polling conducted earlier this year also found that many voters associated higher pump prices with the policies of the current administration.
The latest increase comes as President Donald Trump weighs additional military action against Iran. Administration officials recently met in the White House Situation Room to discuss expanding U.S. operations beyond the current campaign.
According to U.S. Central Command, recent American strikes were carried out in response to Iranian attacks on commercial shipping and were intended to further reduce Tehran’s military capabilities. As the conflict continues, analysts warn that prolonged instability in the region could keep pressure on global energy markets and contribute to continued volatility in gasoline prices.
