Judge Gives Trump Bad News

A federal judge has ordered President Trump to turn over financial records as part of his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC, ruling that the broadcaster is entitled to review documents to evaluate Trump’s claim that a documentary caused significant financial harm to his business interests.

U.S. District Judge Enjoliqué Aytch Lett approved the BBC’s request to obtain records from the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust dating back to Jan. 1, 2023. However, the judge narrowed the scope of the subpoena, concluding that financial records beginning in early 2023 would provide a sufficient picture of Trump’s financial position before and after the documentary aired.

In her ruling, Lett said the timeframe would allow the BBC to assess whether the documentary had any measurable impact on Trump’s finances while avoiding an unnecessarily broad review of older records.

Trump’s legal team has argued that the documentary damaged the value of his brand, businesses and other assets, seeking $10 billion in damages. His attorneys had also maintained that expert testimony would support those claims.

The lawsuit stems from a BBC “Panorama” documentary that aired in October 2024. After the broadcast, the BBC acknowledged that it had edited together separate portions of one of Trump’s speeches in a way that unintentionally created the impression he made a continuous statement encouraging violence during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

The broadcaster later issued a public apology, saying the editing mistakenly suggested viewers were watching one uninterrupted segment when the footage actually came from different parts of the speech. While the BBC acknowledged the editing error, it declined to pay damages to Trump.

The controversy also led to significant leadership changes at the network, with BBC Director-General Tim Davie and news chief Deborah Turness both stepping down following the incident.

The case is expected to continue as both sides prepare to argue whether the documentary caused the reputational and financial damages Trump claims in the lawsuit.
