Biden Calls Trump ‘Reckless’ for Attacking the Criminal Justice System

“Our justice system has endured for nearly 250 years, and it literally is the cornerstone of America,” President Biden stated.

Biden spoke shortly after his opponent, Donald Trump, held a meandering morning press conference at Trump Tower in New York City. The president’s speech was added to his public schedule at the last minute on Friday, seemingly to highlight a contrast with Trump: while Biden addressed pressing foreign policy crises, Trump focused on his own grievances.

Biden opened his speech by addressing the recent verdict in Trump’s hush money trial, emphasizing that his comments were not political. He spent two minutes discussing the verdict and countering Trump’s attacks on the justice system.

“The American principle that no one is above the law was reaffirmed,” Biden said. “Donald Trump was given every opportunity to defend himself. It was a state case, not a federal case, and it was heard by a jury of 12 citizens, 12 Americans, 12 people like you. Like millions of Americans who have served on juries, this jury was chosen the same way every jury in America is chosen. Now he’ll be given the opportunity, as he should, to appeal that decision, just like everyone else has that opportunity. That’s how the American system of justice works.”
