Liz Cheney Denies Trump’s False Jan 6 Evidence Claim

Liz Cheney has refuted Donald Trump’s baseless accusations that she eliminated most evidence from the House select committee’s investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Trump, who faces a federal election interference trial brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith, claims Cheney’s actions hinder his defense preparation. The trial is set to start on March 4, 2024, in Washington DC, with a hearing on Trump’s claim of presidential immunity scheduled for January 9.

Trump’s latest allegation was made on January 1 on Truth Social, where he accused Cheney of illegally deleting evidence from the committee, branding it a sabotage act against his defense. He also mentioned the refusal of Nancy Pelosi to deploy 10,000 soldiers he offered for Capitol security and questioned the legality of the Jack Smith case on immunity grounds.

In response, Cheney, a leading Republican critic of Trump, clarified on January 2 that the committee’s extensive final report and supporting materials are publicly accessible online. She pointed out that Trump and his lawyers have had access to these documents for months and that his all-caps falsehoods don’t alter the facts. She also suggested revisiting the committee’s evidence and hearings for clarity.

Cheney, formerly a Wyoming representative, was one of two Republicans on the January 6 committee, along with ex-representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois.
