Were America’s Borders More Secure Under President Trump?

Democratic Mayor in New Jersey Returns Migrants to Border

The Democratic mayor of Edison, New Jersey, announced plans to have law enforcement arrange a bus to transport migrants, who were sent to his state, back to the U.S.-Mexico border. This decision comes as at least 13 buses from Texas and Louisiana have brought migrants to New Jersey, according to WABC-TV in New York. These migrants have been using buses and trains to travel from drop-off points in Secaucus, Fanwood, Edison, and Trenton to New York.

The strategy of sending buses to New Jersey appears to circumvent an executive order by New York Mayor Eric Adams, which restricts the timing of buses arriving at New York’s Port Authority. Around 450 migrants have been dropped off recently.

Mayor Sam Joshi of Edison stated to WABC that his approach is to directly address the issue rather than shifting the responsibility to other mayors. He raised concerns about security and health risks, citing the inability to identify whether the 40 individuals who arrived in Edison were carrying weapons.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, also a Democrat, expressed a desire to help, acknowledging the migrants as desperate individuals in need of assistance.

Republican Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has been sending migrants to Democrat-led sanctuary cities since 2022, totaling over 80,000 migrants to destinations including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. States like Louisiana and Florida have adopted similar practices.

Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora, a Democrat, informed The Associated Press that while most migrants in his city have proceeded to New York, about 10 have stayed locally with family. He emphasized the empathy for those seeking asylum but noted the limitations in capacity to accommodate them.
