Comer Cautions Garland on Managing Potential Contempt Resolution Involving Hunter

House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chair, James Comer (R-Ky.), issued a warning to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland regarding the handling of a potential contempt of Congress charge against Hunter Biden. Comer emphasized the need for equal treatment, comparing it to the cases of two Republicans previously held in contempt. Speaking to Newsmax’s Chris Salcedo, Comer suggested that inconsistent treatment could strengthen impeachment grounds against Garland.

The committee recently proposed a resolution to hold Hunter Biden in contempt for not complying with a subpoena for a private deposition, related to an impeachment inquiry into President Biden. This resolution will be reviewed in upcoming markups by the Oversight and House Judiciary panels. Hunter Biden, expressing willingness to testify publicly, has faced criticism from House Republicans who insist on a closed-door session.

The inquiry delves into Hunter Biden’s foreign business activities and the Department of Justice’s investigation into his tax affairs, with both Hunter and President Biden denying any misconduct. Comer’s remarks have drawn criticism from Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), who highlighted the upcoming government shutdown deadline and questioned the seriousness of House Republicans.
