Ex-Trump Attorney Says Former President’s Conviction is ‘Absolutely’ a Possibility

Joe Tacopina, a former trial lawyer for ex-President Trump in New York, gave a bleak outlook on Trump’s legal troubles, suggesting a conviction in his federal criminal cases is “absolutely possible.” Speaking to MSNBC’s Rev. Al Sharpton, Tacopina described some of Trump’s federal cases as serious matters. He acknowledged the possibility of conviction, citing the role of a 12-member jury and the seriousness of the federal prosecutors involved.

Trump is facing four felony charges in Washington, D.C., related to alleged conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and efforts to obstruct the certification of President Biden’s election victory on January 6, 2021. Tacopina, while acknowledging a political aspect to some of these cases, emphasized their legitimacy, noting that a grand jury had voted to indict.

Apart from Washington, D.C., Trump is also facing charges in Florida, Georgia, and New York City, totaling 91 felony counts across four federal and state indictments. This includes charges in New York City for allegedly falsifying business records related to hush money payments.

Tacopina, who has withdrawn from representing Trump in the hush money case and a civil lawsuit by E. Jean Carroll, pointed out the challenge Trump faces with trials set in locations that are not favorable to him, such as New York City, Washington, and Atlanta. He suggested that the possibility of conviction cannot be dismissed and noted that prosecutors are confident in their cases.

The Florida charges against Trump involve mishandling classified documents post-presidency, while the Georgia charges are about alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump has pleaded not guilty in all cases and is seeking to dismiss the Justice Department’s case, claiming presidential immunity, a matter recently heard by a D.C. appeals court.
