President Donald Trump said Friday that the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has been vandalized, as officials continue addressing maintenance issues including algae growth and reported peeling paint following the project’s recent completion.

In a social media post, Trump described the situation as deliberate damage to a high-profile landmark located between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, and said law enforcement is actively investigating the matter.

The president also referenced a separate incident in which the phrase “86 47” was found written in grass on the National Mall. The numbers have drawn political attention, with some interpreting them as a symbolic message of opposition to Trump, who is the 47th president, based on the slang meaning of “86” as removal or rejection.

Trump said similar actions had taken place near the Reflecting Pool, claiming that portions of the surrounding area and newly installed surfaces had been intentionally damaged. He suggested that efforts to restore and improve national landmarks in Washington were being undermined.

The Reflecting Pool renovation is part of a broader beautification initiative in the capital city overseen by the Interior Department. The project has been promoted as part of ongoing efforts to upgrade monuments, memorials, fountains, and other public spaces across Washington, D.C.

Following completion of the renovation, officials confirmed that the pool has experienced an algae bloom that temporarily turned parts of the water green. Maintenance crews have been treating the issue using hydrogen peroxide and enhanced filtration systems in an effort to restore water clarity.

There have also been reports that a newly applied blue coating added during the renovation has begun to peel in certain areas, prompting additional maintenance work.

Trump stated in his post that most of the algae growth has already been reduced and expressed confidence that the remaining issues would be resolved soon. He also said that only a limited portion of the pool had been affected by what he described as vandalism and that repairs would be completed shortly.

Despite the maintenance challenges, the administration has highlighted the broader renovation effort as a major upgrade to several iconic landmarks in the nation’s capital. According to Trump, dozens of monuments, statues, and fountains have been cleaned or restored as part of the ongoing initiative.
