On Sunday, Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, announced his intention to initiate a motion to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his leadership position. This decision comes in the wake of Congress’s last-minute vote to prevent a government shutdown.
During his appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Gaetz stated, “I plan to present a motion against Speaker McCarthy this week. It’s time for a change, and we need leadership that is reliable.”
He reiterated his plans on ABC News’ “This Week,” following the Congressional approval on Saturday night of a temporary bill ensuring government operations until November 17.
McCarthy, responding to Gaetz’s declaration, remarked, “This isn’t news. He’s been targeting me since I began my political journey. I’m confident I’ll weather this. It’s evident this is a personal vendetta for Matt.”
McCarthy further commented that Gaetz seems more focused on gaining media attention than on constructive work, challenging him with, “If he wants a confrontation, let’s have it, but then let’s get back to governing.”
The interim funding bill, while providing additional funds for disaster relief, does not allocate aid to Ukraine. McCarthy had chosen to exclude the Ukraine aid from the original Senate bill, suggesting it be addressed separately in the future.
