Trump Criticizes Evangelical Figure for Supporting DeSantis, Labels Him a ‘Scammer’
Former President Trump recently criticized Bob Vander Plaats, a prominent Iowa evangelical leader, following Vander Plaats’ endorsement of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. In a post on Truth Social, Trump disparaged Vander Plaats, labeling him a scammer and questioning his credibility. Trump’s reaction comes after Vander Plaats, on Fox News, expressed the need for a winnable Republican candidate in 2024 and praised DeSantis for his leadership and electoral successes in Florida.
Vander Plaats’ endorsement follows a similar move by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, both highlighting DeSantis’ significant victory margins and his appeal across various voter demographics. Trump’s campaign responded with a critical email and statement, mocking Vander Plaats and dismissing the significance of his and Reynolds’ endorsements for DeSantis. The campaign emphasized Trump’s strong support from other Iowa faith leaders who did not demand financial compensation, unlike Vander Plaats.
Additionally, Trump took aim at Reynolds, accusing her of disloyalty and predicting a negative impact on her political career from her endorsement of DeSantis. He further commented that the union of two “disloyal” figures was ironically pleasing to watch.
The endorsement battle comes as the 2024 Republican presidential race heats up, with less than two months until the Iowa caucuses. Despite these endorsements for DeSantis, Trump still leads in national polls for the Republican presidential nomination.
