GOP Governor Ignores Trump Pick
A high-stakes political showdown is unfolding in Georgia as voters head to the polls to select a Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate. The high-profile primary contest pits Donald Trump, the undisputed leader of the national Republican Party, directly against Governor Brian Kemp, the state’s most popular GOP figure. In a unique twist, Trump has thrown his weight behind Representative Mike Collins, while Kemp is actively backing former college football coach Derek Dooley. This proxy war marks the latest chapter in a famously turbulent relationship between the two powerhouses, whose history includes a bitter feud over the 2020 election results and a subsequent, uneasy truce ahead of the 2024 campaign.
While a Trump endorsement remains the ultimate prize in conservative politics, Peach State Republicans have demonstrated a rare willingness to buck the former president’s picks. Political strategists point back to 2022, when a whole host of Trump-backed primary challengers failed to unseat Kemp and other statewide incumbents. However, insiders acknowledge that both Trump and Kemp possess immense leverage to move the needle among core voters. Trump dramatically shook up the dynamic of this race by officially endorsing Collins over the weekend on Truth Social, praising him as a “WARRIOR and WINNER” while taking sharp jabs at Dooley for publicly acknowledging the certified results of the 2020 Georgia election.
On paper, Collins has long been the natural fit for the MAGA base. The congressman famously built his national profile by championing the Laken Riley Act, which became the very first piece of legislation signed into law during Trump’s second term. Collins’s campaign infrastructure is deeply intertwined with Trump’s political inner circle, boasting staff and endorsements from key loyalists like Representative Brian Jack, Trump’s former White House political director. Collins quickly capitalized on the late endorsement by thanking the president and joining him for a high-profile tele-rally on the eve of the election.
Meanwhile, Kemp has stood firmly behind Dooley since last summer, reinforcing his support with a final social media push framing the former coach as a conservative fighter who will put Georgians first. Dooley has leaned heavily into his background as a political outsider and a former gridiron coach, running on a platform focused on instituting congressional term limits and slashing the ballooning federal deficit. Ironically, Dooley’s advisors argue that his anti-establishment, anti-Washington message actually mirrors the exact populist frustration that fueled Trump’s original 2016 presidential campaign.
The biggest wildcard in this primary is the element of time. Because early voting had already concluded before Trump made his formal announcement, Collins has a remarkably narrow window to leverage the endorsement. Some local Republican strategists question whether the last-minute endorsement will have a maximum impact, noting it would have carried far more weight had it dropped a few weeks prior. Nonetheless, with polling tightening significantly ahead of the vote, the race serves as a crucial litmus test of Trump’s enduring influence versus Kemp’s massive localized popularity in a critical swing state.
