Is Biden Behind All Trump Indictments?
Republican legislators are questioning the impact of former President Trump’s support for House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in the upcoming speaker election, according to sources.
Significance: While Trump’s endorsement might influence some, it could deter moderate Republicans. Moreover, the GOP conference’s selection process for a speaker nominee is a confidential vote, eliminating the need for public allegiance.
The internal vote by the House GOP conference for the next speaker is set for this Wednesday. Statements: Some moderate representatives, especially from areas that favored President Biden in 2020, express concerns that aligning with Trump’s chosen candidate might adversely affect their local electoral prospects.
“One could argue that this endorsement might speed up support for Jordan from those already inclined but solidify opposition from others,” commented a legislator. “Some might appreciate the endorsement, while others are weary of Trump and wish he’d remain less involved,” a moderate remarked. “For me, it’s not a positive. His reputation is challenging.” A conservative supporting Jordan pondered, “Can GOP members from Biden-favored regions support a speaker with Trump’s backing? They’ll eventually have to make a public decision in the House.”
