Judge’s Wife Denies Claims of Sharing Messages Against Trump
Dawn Engoron, the wife of Judge Arthur Engoron, has explicitly refuted claims that she authored derogatory social media posts aimed at ex-President Donald Trump, as reported by Newsweek.
Activist Laura Loomer leveled accusations at Dawn Engoron for managing a social media profile that frequently issued negative statements about Trump. The allegations gained traction as Judge Engoron is presiding over Trump’s civil business fraud trial, which has been a subject of contention. Dawn Engoron’s denial—”I do not have a Twitter account. This is not me. I have not posted any anti-Trump messages”—counters claims that could potentially influence the trial’s integrity.
In the broader legal context, New York Attorney General Letitia James is seeking $250 million from Trump, accusing him of significantly overvaluing his assets for financial gain. Judge Engoron has made a preliminary ruling in September affirming the fraud committed by Trump and his associates, with further charges under review.
Trump has consistently denied the allegations, suggesting that the legal action is politically motivated and branding Judge Engoron as partisan, further criticizing the imposition of a gag order on him.
Despite conservative outcry for a mistrial, legal experts like former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani have noted that a judge’s family member’s social media activities are not sufficient grounds for disqualification unless the judge themselves exhibits partiality.
Loomer’s evidence includes screenshots from an account under “Dawn Marie,” showing anti-Trump sentiment and criticism of Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba. This account has now been set to private. One such post displayed an anti-Trump graffiti image.
Amid the controversy, some conservatives like Richard Grenell, Trump’s former acting intelligence chief, and Mercedes Schlapp, his ex-communications director, suggest that these posts indicate a biased trial. However, others argue that the possibility of an impartial trial for Trump is inherently compromised.
This summary encapsulates the complexities surrounding the alleged social media activity of Judge Engoron’s wife and its implications for the legal proceedings against Donald Trump.
