Matt Gaetz Wants House Speaker McCarthy Kicked Out, Do You?

In a recent interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” former Speaker Nancy Pelosi critiqued both Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Matt Gaetz. Pelosi characterized Gaetz as someone who primarily seeks media attention and highlighted his limited influence within the House.
Pelosi commented, “Spending media time on him is misplaced because his influence in the House is primarily about TV appearances and online fundraising.”
Earlier on the same show, Gaetz indicated he would introduce a motion this week to challenge McCarthy’s position as Speaker. This move means the Democratic party must make a choice: back McCarthy by supporting or abstaining, or potentially topple his Speakership by opposing. With a narrow Republican majority, the Democrats’ decision carries significant weight.
Though Pelosi remained tight-lipped about her own vote, she recommended her party follow the guidance of House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. She commended Jeffries for his role in managing an expected government shutdown and praised the continuing resolution that averted the crisis. Pelosi remarked, “The resolution’s passage was a testament to the Democrats’ effort and a setback for far-right Republicans.”
She then expressed her frustration with the Republicans, accusing them of double standards. According to Pelosi, while many Republicans supported substantial tax cuts that favored the rich, they opposed funding the government citing fiscal prudence.
She didn’t miss a chance to jab at the former President, without naming him directly, commenting on the significant national debt incurred during his tenure. Pelosi remarked, “It’s disingenuous for them to cite spending concerns when they endorsed a tax break for America’s wealthiest, adding $2.5 trillion to our debt when that particular president was in office. That’s a $2 trillion addition to the national debt.”
