McCarthy Stresses Border Concerns Over Ukraine Issues

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) emphasized the significance of the U.S. border situation over the challenges in Ukraine during a recent press conference on September 29, 2023. While expressing his commitment to assisting Ukraine, McCarthy highlighted the border crisis as a more pressing matter.

“Ensuring the security of America and its borders is my top priority,” McCarthy stated during his appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” He added, “While I advocate for equipping Ukraine with the necessary weapons, my primary focus remains on our border. We need to find a collaborative solution.”

The temporary funding measure passed by Congress, which averted a government shutdown, did not favor Ukraine. An initial proposal from the Senate had allocated over $6 billion in aid to Ukraine. However, in an unexpected move, McCarthy presented a bill that secured government funding but excluded the aid package for Ukraine.

The decision has been met with mixed reactions within the Republican party. While some House Republicans have expressed reservations about aiding Ukraine, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other GOP members have shown support. Despite the internal differences, the Senate Republicans eventually backed McCarthy’s proposal.

The ongoing debate has intensified the call for Congress to address the Ukraine situation. However, McCarthy reiterated his primary focus on the border issues. Responding to concerns about insufficient funds for Ukraine, McCarthy mentioned, “Currently, there’s over $3 billion available for their assistance. If there are challenges, we’re open to discussions.”

Highlighting the gravity of the border situation, McCarthy stated, “More Americans face threats at our border than in Ukraine.” When questioned about linking Ukraine’s aid to border security, McCarthy emphasized the importance of the U.S. border, suggesting that comprehensive aid to Ukraine would be contingent on border security measures.
