NBA Insults Trump
President Donald Trump brushed aside criticism and boos he received during Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Monday night, describing the NBA as “a little left wing” while also praising the league as “great entertainment.”
Speaking to reporters after arriving in New York, Trump was asked whether he believed the NBA had moved away from the political controversies that drew criticism in recent years.
The president responded that the league still leans left politically but remains one of the country’s top sports attractions.
Trump Says Crowd Reaction Was Positive
Trump also disputed suggestions that the crowd reaction toward him was overwhelmingly negative.
The president said he viewed the reception as enthusiastic and argued that many fans were cheering when he appeared on the arena’s video screens.
Television broadcasts showed a mix of cheers and boos after cameras focused on Trump, who watched the game from a private suite alongside his granddaughter and Knicks owner James Dolan.
The reaction became one of the most talked-about moments of the night outside the action on the court.
Security Measures Drew Attention Before The Game
Trump’s attendance had already generated discussion in the days leading up to the matchup.
Security around Madison Square Garden was significantly increased, with additional screening procedures and law enforcement presence put in place ahead of the president’s arrival.
Some fans expressed frustration over logistical changes, including increased security restrictions and disruptions around the arena.
Critics Questioned Trump’s Appearance
Several political figures and commentators criticized the president’s decision to attend.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggested the extra security requirements negatively affected the atmosphere surrounding the game.
Sports personality Stephen A. Smith also argued that political figures can sometimes become a distraction when attending major sporting events, saying the focus should remain on the teams and fans.
Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized the attention surrounding Trump’s visit as New York celebrated the Knicks’ return to the NBA Finals.
Historic Appearance At NBA Finals
Despite the controversy, Trump’s appearance marked a notable moment in sports history.
The game is believed to be the first NBA Finals contest attended by a sitting U.S. president.
The event also drew a large number of celebrities and public figures, including Ben Stiller, Larry David, DJ Khaled, Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey, and Timothée Chalamet.
While reactions to Trump’s attendance were divided, the president made clear afterward that he viewed the experience as a success and said he enjoyed both the game and the crowd’s response.
