Obama Calls Trump Dangerous, Is He Right?

Michelle Obama Criticizes Trump in Third DNC Speech

At the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago, former First Lady Michelle Obama delivered a powerful critique of Donald Trump during her keynote speech. This marked her third consecutive DNC address where she openly criticized the former President, focusing on his privileged background and his adversarial stance towards her husband’s presidency, which she suggested was racially motivated.

Michelle Obama eloquently described how Trump has consistently used fear-mongering tactics against them, framing his worldview as constrained and threatened by the achievements of successful, educated Black individuals. She paused her speech to address the audience directly, posing a rhetorical question about informing Trump that the presidential role he once held and seeks again might be seen by him as a “Black job,” given his prejudiced views.

Continuing her address, she lambasted Trump for recycling the same deceptive tactics—using hateful, sexist, and racist rhetoric as a smokescreen for a lack of substantive policy proposals that would genuinely improve American lives. She contrasted this with the Democratic ethos of hard work and perseverance, qualities embodied by Vice President Kamala Harris, whom she praised for her resilience, integrity, and the joyful vigor she brings to her role.

Michelle Obama emphasized the harsh reality that most Americans don’t have the safety net of “failing forward”—a privilege she attributed to Trump through his generational wealth. She pointed out the double standards in how society treats failures and mistakes depending on one’s background. Unlike Trump, she noted, most people don’t get numerous chances to succeed after repeated failures, nor can they afford to manipulate the system in their favor.

Reflecting on her previous DNC speeches, Michelle Obama reminded the audience of her 2016 assertion in Philadelphia that America was already the greatest country on earth, countering Trump’s campaign slogan about making America great again. Her speeches have consistently highlighted the chaos and lack of empathy she sees in Trump’s approach to leadership, advocating instead for a governance style marked by compassion and efficiency as demonstrated by the Biden administration.

In her call to action, she passionately urged the delegates and viewers to participate actively in the upcoming election. She stressed the importance of voting in overwhelming numbers to eliminate any doubts about the outcome, thereby overcoming any attempts at voter suppression. With fervent conviction, she declared that the power to shape the future of the country lies in the hands of its citizens, through their votes and civic engagement.

Ending her speech, Michelle Obama appealed to the legacy of previous generations’ struggles and sacrifices, motivating the audience to honor that legacy by voting to uphold the values of unity, progress, and inclusivity. She expressed confidence in the ability of Americans to again rise to the occasion, emphasizing the urgency and significance of the upcoming election.
