Republican Senator Insults Trump With What?

A Republican senator is drawing attention for unusually blunt remarks about Iran’s negotiating strategy in ongoing talks tied to President Donald Trump’s proposed peace framework, suggesting Tehran is deliberately stalling in hopes of outlasting the current administration.

Sen. Tim Sheehy made the comments during a Monday appearance on Fox News, where he argued that Iran is employing what he described as a “rope-a-dope” strategy—buying time and waiting for political change in Washington rather than reaching a durable agreement. He warned that the negotiations should be viewed with skepticism, given what he characterized as Iran’s long-standing refusal to engage in good faith.

Sheehy said the tactic is designed to stretch out discussions until Trump and his team are no longer in office, framing the delay as a strategic effort by Tehran to avoid binding commitments. He also said the U.S. must remain cautious in dealing with a regime he believes has not changed its fundamental posture toward the United States.

His remarks add to growing unease among some Republicans over the pace and direction of the Iran negotiations, even as administration officials continue to describe the talks as productive and forward-moving.

Vice President JD Vance has been leading discussions in Switzerland, where officials say Iran has agreed in principle to allow international inspectors back into the country as part of the next phase of negotiations. The administration has framed that development as an early sign of progress toward curbing Iran’s nuclear program.

Trump also weighed in on the talks through social media, saying Iran would agree to enhanced inspections aimed at ensuring what he called “nuclear honesty” over the long term, while emphasizing that negotiations are still ongoing and subject to further technical discussions.
