NYC Mayor Eric Adams expressed disagreement with the White House’s stance on immigration, highlighting an ongoing difference of opinion with the Biden administration.
During a conversation with Semafor’s Ben Smith, while Adams acknowledged agreement with the Biden administration on several issues, he emphasized his contrasting views on immigration. He mentioned, “Although I’ve supported many of President Biden’s initiatives, especially around crime and environmental matters, I must say I differ with them on immigration.”
Adams, who has a background in law enforcement, has previously voiced concerns regarding the financial implications of supporting immigrants who often lack legal work permits.
However, a recent decision by the Biden administration to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to over 400,000 Venezuelans in the U.S. received Adams’s approval, alleviating the fears of many who believe Adams’s strong statements might lead to increased hostility towards migrants.
Tensions regarding immigration have been on the rise in parts of New York. Instances of protests against migrants have been noted, including on Staten Island, where demonstrators opposed the housing of migrants and hindered their transportation, leading to several arrests.
While condemning these protests, Adams continues to emphasize the financial strain the city feels due to immigration. He stressed that New York City taxpayers bear the significant financial weight, stating that the federal contribution is only a fraction of the total cost, affecting programs meant to uplift low-income New Yorkers.
With an upcoming trip to Mexico and other countries, Adams aims to address the migration issue at its root, seeking to discourage potential migrants from targeting NYC as a destination.
