On Tuesday, House Democrats expressed their intention not to back Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in an upcoming vote that could remove him from his leadership position.

After a lengthy meeting at the Capitol, House Democrats confirmed their stance to vote against McCarthy retaining his role as Speaker.

“Our direction is clear, and we won’t be rallying behind Kevin McCarthy,” stated Rep. Pramila Jayapal, leader of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

When questioned about the caucus’s collective decision against supporting McCarthy, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) affirmed it.

This development comes just hours before a scheduled House vote on McCarthy’s potential removal, initiated by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) the previous night. It’s anticipated that there will be an initial procedural vote to either set aside the resolution or forward it to a committee, followed by the main vote on McCarthy’s position.

Given the slim GOP majority in the House, even a few Republican votes against McCarthy could sway the decision to the Democrats. To date, four GOP members have indicated they would side with Gaetz in voting against McCarthy.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), previously removed from a committee due to a McCarthy-led initiative, stated her intention to vote against McCarthy.

“It’s hard to believe any Democrat would want McCarthy to continue as Speaker,” she remarked.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who was previously barred from a committee by McCarthy, also expressed his intention to vote against him.

Schiff commented, “I’m definitely voting against him. He’s shown time and again his willingness to overturn elections, break budget agreements, and go back on his word. We can’t trust him to lead such a crucial institution.”
