The Way This Elderly Couple Died in the Condo Collapse Will Rip Your Heart Out

The Surfside, Florida condominium collapse is one of the most horrific tragedies in American history. What makes this so awful are the emerging details that there have been longtime concerns on the building’s safety and stability – yet nothing was done about it.

So far, there are still 150 people missing and 11 dead.

Two of the victims were an elderly couple named Antonio Lozano, 82, and his wife, Gladys, 80. The two had been married for 58 years.

Here is a photo of the couple from Twitter:

How They Were Found Together Will Make You Cry

A long-married, elderly couple who died in the Florida condo disaster were found by each other’s side in the mangled wreckage of the collapse — still together in bed, their family said.

“I was told they were in bed together. That’s the end of the romantic story,” their son, Sergio Lozano, told the outlet.

Sergio said his parents, who met when they were 12 years old in Cuba, often joked about who would die first, because neither wanted to live without the other.

“My dad would say to my mom, ‘If you die, I don’t even know how to fry an egg, I’m gonna die.’ My mom would say, if my dad would die, ‘I don’t know how to pay the bills,’” Sergio said. “I always told my mom, ‘Don’t worry, I will do it.’ But they died together.”

Sergio had dinner with his parents and slept at their condominium the night before the collapse.

Living in his own condo two blocks away, Sergio was awakened that next night around 1:30 a.m.

“I thought it was a tornado outside my apartment. I opened the door and I told my wife, ‘The building is not there,’” he said.

“She goes, ‘What do you mean?’ ‘The building is gone.’ ‘What do you mean?’ ‘My parents’ apartment is not there!’” he recalled.

No cause for the condominium collapse has been determined yet.

Sadly, more heart wrenching stories like this are sure to come as the searching through rubble and debris continues.
