Top Country Star Makes Trump Supporters Mad
Kacey Musgraves is facing backlash from conservative critics after using her birthday celebration to ask fans to support an organization that helps immigrant children affected by deportation.
The Grammy-winning country singer made the appeal Friday while celebrating her 38th birthday during a concert in Chicago. Musgraves highlighted the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, an organization that provides legal assistance and financial support to unaccompanied immigrant children.
During the concert, Musgraves encouraged fans to contribute whatever they could, even suggesting that 50 cents or a dollar would make a difference. She also emphasized that she viewed the request as being about helping children rather than making a political statement.
“It’s not even a political thing. It’s just, these kids need help,” Musgraves said in a video shared from the event.
The singer has supported the organization previously. Earlier this year, she donated proceeds from a sale of clothing and other items from her personal wardrobe to the group.
Her latest appeal quickly drew criticism from conservative commentators and Trump supporters, who questioned her description of some deportations as “unfair” and challenged her decision to focus on immigrant children.
Fox News personality Tomi Lahren questioned the terminology directly, asking what qualifies as an “unfair deportation.”
Newsmax host Rob Schmitt also criticized Musgraves, arguing that political disagreements have increasingly found their way into popular music.
Other conservative social media users went further, questioning why Musgraves was not directing her charitable efforts toward American families affected by violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants.
The controversy is hardly new for Musgraves, who has previously used her public platform to criticize President Donald Trump and his policies, particularly on immigration and other social issues.
Her support for immigrant families has also extended beyond financial contributions. Earlier this year, Musgraves invited three teenage brothers from Texas who perform mariachi music to open for her during a series of sold-out shows after the family became involved in an immigration enforcement case.
The teenagers had been detained along with their parents by Immigration and Customs Enforcement before eventually receiving an opportunity to perform alongside the country star.
Musgraves has increasingly used her celebrity platform to draw attention to causes she supports, while her political views have occasionally put her at odds with portions of the country music audience.
Her latest birthday message has once again exposed that divide, with supporters praising her decision to help vulnerable children and critics accusing her of turning a personal celebration into another political statement.
