Illinois Governor Appeals to Abbott to Cease Migrant Transports Amid Severe Winter Weather
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker urged Texas Governor Greg Abbott to stop sending migrants to the Midwest during the severe winter conditions. In a letter, Pritzker highlighted the harsh reality of migrants arriving in Illinois without adequate clothing for the freezing temperatures, and expressed concern for their safety, particularly as Chicago’s shelters are already overwhelmed with migrants sent from Texas.
Pritzker criticized Abbott’s actions as life-threatening, especially given the forecast of sub-zero temperatures in Chicago, putting the health and survival of hundreds of children and families at risk.
This criticism is not unique to Pritzker. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has also condemned Abbott for his approach, accusing him of mean-spiritedness and taking legal action against 17 charter companies involved in transporting migrants. Adams filed a lawsuit seeking $708 million for the care of migrants over the past 20 months, a response to what he views as a mismanagement of the migrant influx at the southern border under President Biden’s administration.
In response, Abbott defended the voluntary nature of the migrant transports, authorized by the Biden administration, and accused Adams of violating migrants’ constitutional rights. He warned that legal repercussions could follow if the lawsuit persists. Additionally, Abbott mentioned that Texas refrains from using firearms to deter migrants due to potential legal challenges from the Biden administration.
