Trump Hit With Unexpected Bad News

President Donald Trump experienced a mixed night in Tuesday’s Republican primaries and runoffs, scoring several important victories while also suffering a notable setback in Georgia’s closely watched governor’s race.

In Georgia, healthcare executive and billionaire Rick Jackson defeated Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in the Republican gubernatorial runoff, despite Jones receiving endorsements from both Trump and Gov. Brian Kemp. The result marks one of the few major statewide primary defeats for a Trump-backed candidate this election cycle.

Jackson’s victory capped a rapid rise from political newcomer to statewide contender. After investing millions of dollars into his campaign, he positioned himself as an outsider focused on economic growth and government reform. He is now expected to face former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in November’s general election.

While the governor’s race delivered disappointing news for Trump allies, the president saw success elsewhere in Georgia. Rep. Mike Collins secured a decisive victory in the Republican Senate runoff after receiving Trump’s endorsement shortly before Election Day. Collins defeated former college football coach Derek Dooley, who had the support of Kemp and several establishment Republicans.

Collins will now challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in what is expected to be one of the most competitive Senate races of the year. During the primary campaign, Collins highlighted his support for Trump’s agenda and promoted his role in advancing immigration-related legislation.

Beyond Georgia, Trump-backed candidates also performed well in other key contests. In Alabama, Rep. Barry Moore won the Republican Senate runoff to replace retiring Sen. Tommy Tuberville. Moore defeated former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson despite late polling suggesting the race could be highly competitive.

Moore’s victory was aided by significant outside spending, including support from groups connected to the cryptocurrency industry. Digital asset advocates have increasingly invested in congressional races as lawmakers debate regulations affecting the sector.

In Oklahoma, Rep. Kevin Hern won the Republican Senate primary, giving Trump another victory in a high-profile race. Meanwhile, former state Sen. Mike Mazzei, who also received Trump’s endorsement, advanced to a Republican gubernatorial runoff after finishing among the top candidates in a crowded primary field.

Mazzei will face Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond in an August runoff that could provide another test of Trump’s influence among Republican voters. With Oklahoma remaining a strong Republican state, the winner is widely viewed as the favorite in the general election.

Tuesday’s results highlighted both the strengths and limitations of Trump’s political endorsements. While his support helped several candidates secure victories in Senate contests, it was not enough to carry every race, particularly in Georgia’s governor’s contest.

Elsewhere, Washington, D.C., experienced lengthy vote-counting delays as election officials managed ranked-choice voting for the first time. Several key Democratic races remained too close to call late into the evening, with officials warning that final results could take days to determine.

As primary season continues, upcoming runoffs in states such as Oklahoma and South Carolina are expected to offer additional insight into Trump’s influence within Republican politics ahead of the November elections.
