Trump Mar-a-lago Attacked
An armed man was shot and killed by law enforcement outside Mar-a-Lago on Sunday, according to the United States Secret Service.
President Donald Trump was not at the Palm Beach property at the time of the incident. The resort frequently serves as his weekend residence, but officials confirmed no protectees were present when the confrontation unfolded.
Authorities said the man, believed to be in his 20s and not yet publicly identified, was seen near the north gate of the property carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel container. The Secret Service described the situation as an “unauthorized entry” into the estate’s secure perimeter.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said during a press briefing that a sheriff’s deputy and two Secret Service agents approached the individual. According to Bradshaw, the man set down the fuel can but then raised the shotgun, prompting officers to open fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement personnel were injured.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead in investigating the shooting, officials said, and will review the circumstances surrounding the encounter.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns about security threats involving public officials and government facilities. Just days earlier, police arrested an 18-year-old who allegedly ran toward the U.S. Capitol while armed with a shotgun. In recent years, the country has seen a rise in politically charged threats and violence, including two attempts on Trump’s life during the 2024 campaign cycle.
According to data released previously by the United States Capitol Police, investigations into threats targeting members of Congress, their families and staff increased significantly last year — a trend that has put additional strain on federal and local security agencies.
Sunday’s shooting underscores the ongoing challenges facing law enforcement as they work to secure high-profile locations tied to national leaders while responding swiftly to potential threats.
