Laphonza Butler, previously an adviser to Vice President Harris and the current president of EMILY’s List, has been appointed to fill the U.S. Senate seat in California, previously occupied by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who passed away at 90.
The announcement was made by California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) on Sunday evening. He had earlier committed to appointing a Black woman to Feinstein’s position if it ever became vacant. With Butler’s appointment, this commitment has been honored.
Newsom highlighted that Butler’s appointment is historic as she will be the first openly Black lesbian to serve in the U.S. Senate.
“Announcing Laphonza Butler as California’s new U.S. Senator fills me with pride,” expressed Newsom. “While we grieve the loss of Sen. Feinstein, the values she championed are under threat. Laphonza’s lifelong dedication to women, girls, and workers makes her the right choice.”
Butler, besides leading EMILY’s List, has been a prominent figure in labor leadership. She will resign from her current position at EMILY’s List.
Earlier, as Sen. Feinstein’s health concerns grew, several Democrats, including Reps. Barbara Lee, Katie Porter, and Adam Schiff, showed interest in the Senate seat. Newsom had clarified that he would not choose anyone already contesting for the seat.
Anthony York, a spokesperson for Newsom, informed The Associated Press that there was no precondition for Butler to abstain from the 2024 race. The deadline for entering the 2024 race is Dec. 8.
“Laphonza’s leadership at EMILY’s List and her role in California’s largest labor union showcase her commitment to justice and values,” Newsom added. “I trust her to uphold Sen. Feinstein’s legacy and champion Californians’ rights.”
Although Butler resides in Maryland, she owns property in California and intends to re-register as a voter there before her swearing-in. The Senate reconvenes on Tuesday.
Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) welcomed Butler, praising her dedication to workers, LGBTQ rights, and promoting women in politics. He emphasized the importance of California having full Senate representation.
Rep. Barbara Lee expressed her well wishes to Butler but remained focused on her 2024 Senate campaign. Rep. Adam Schiff, another contender for the Senate seat, highlighted his fundraising prowess.
