Trump Takes Emergency Decision On Sunday
President Donald Trump said the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool may soon be partially drained as officials work to address maintenance issues that have emerged following a major renovation project at one of Washington’s most recognizable landmarks.
In a social media post Saturday evening, Trump said administration officials met with contractors to discuss the next steps and indicated that draining a significant portion of the pool could be necessary to complete repairs. He added that the work would be carried out as quickly as possible in an effort to minimize disruptions.
The president also pointed to recent incidents of alleged vandalism at the site, saying multiple individuals had been arrested in connection with damage to the Reflecting Pool. Trump described the acts as an attack on a national landmark and argued that those responsible should face serious consequences.
Among those detained was former Olympian David Hearn, who told reporters he was arrested after touching a section of peeling liner near the pool. He was reportedly charged with a misdemeanor offense related to damage of government property.
The Reflecting Pool has faced a series of challenges in recent weeks. Shortly after the completion of a renovation project valued at nearly $15 million, the water developed a noticeable green tint due to an algae bloom, prompting additional maintenance efforts by federal officials.
Interior Department representatives have said crews have been working to restore the pool and improve water quality. Officials recently described the cleaning process as being in its final stages, including vacuuming and other maintenance procedures designed to address lingering issues.
The department has also confirmed that hydrogen peroxide treatments were being used to combat algae growth, stressing that the process posed no known threat to wildlife or the surrounding environment.
Trump defended the renovation project, arguing that the restored Reflecting Pool had achieved a cleaner appearance and improved functionality compared with previous years. He claimed the project created a more striking reflection of both the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.
The Reflecting Pool, originally completed more than a century ago, has undergone multiple repairs and restoration efforts throughout its history. Officials have long battled issues involving leaks, water quality, and structural wear.
The latest maintenance concerns come as the Trump administration continues to pursue a number of high-profile construction and renovation projects across Washington, D.C. Several of those initiatives have generated debate over costs, design choices, and their impact on historic federal properties.
For now, contractors and federal officials are expected to determine the scope of the necessary repairs before deciding how much of the Reflecting Pool must be drained and how long the work could take. Visitors to the National Mall may continue to see maintenance activity around the site as crews work to restore one of the capital’s most visited landmarks.
