Trump To Endorse Who For Senate?
President Trump said over the weekend that he is carefully weighing whether to step into the Texas Republican Senate primary with an endorsement, signaling he may soon play a role in the high-profile intraparty contest.
Speaking with reporters Sunday at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., Trump said he is taking “a serious look” at the race but has not yet made a final decision.
“The challenge is that I get along with all of them,” Trump said, noting that he has positive relationships with the three major contenders: Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), and Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas). “I like all of them,” he added.
Trump hinted that clarity could come soon, suggesting that his involvement tends to carry weight in Republican primaries. “You’ll be seeing something before long,” he said, adding that candidates he backs generally come out on top.
So far, the president has stayed on the sidelines of the Texas GOP primary, even as the race draws national attention. His comments came just hours after Democrats scored an upset by flipping Texas’s 9th state Senate seat on Saturday.
The district, which Trump carried by 17 points in the 2024 election, had been considered safely Republican, making the Democratic win a notable development in the deep-red state. Trump had previously urged voters to support the Republican candidate in that contest.
When asked Sunday about the loss, however, Trump appeared to downplay it, saying he was not closely following the race.
“That was a local Texas issue,” he said. “I wasn’t involved. These things happen.”
