President Donald Trump on Saturday expressed condolences following the deaths of two U.S. service members in Jordan, calling the loss “a very sad thing” as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate.

Speaking with NewsNation, Trump honored the troops, saying they served their country with courage and remained committed to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. He praised their dedication and sacrifice while reflecting on the growing conflict in the region.

The president’s remarks came after the U.S. military launched airstrikes against Iranian targets on Saturday in response to missile and drone attacks on two military bases in Jordan the previous day. According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes were intended to reduce Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and target Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces believed to be responsible for the attacks.

CENTCOM said two American service members were killed in the Jordan attack, while another remains missing. The latest casualties bring the total number of U.S. military personnel killed during the conflict with Iran to 16.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth paid tribute to the fallen troops, saying their sacrifice strengthens the nation’s resolve.

The conflict with Iran is now approaching its fifth month, contributing to higher global energy prices and increasing concerns about economic stability. Recent public opinion surveys have indicated that many Americans would like to see the fighting come to an end.

Meanwhile, a senior Iranian adviser warned Friday that the conflict could expand further, saying broader military operations could resume if U.S. strikes against Iran continue.
