Trump’s Obama Photo Goes Viral
President Donald Trump drew widespread attention on social media after sharing a side-by-side image comparing himself to former President Barack Obama, with the post quickly going viral for reasons beyond its apparent intent.

The image, posted on Truth Social, featured a photograph of Trump in his New York Military Academy uniform alongside a photo of Obama during his freshman year at Occidental College. Trump described his image as showing him at age 20. However, multiple reports noted that the photograph actually appears to be his 1964 New York Military Academy yearbook portrait, taken when he was 17 years old.
The post was one of several AI-generated and historical images Trump shared throughout the day, including an AI-created image depicting himself in a symbolic religious scene. However, the comparison with Obama received far more public attention and quickly spread across social media platforms, where it went viral for all the wrong reasons.
Online users responded with a wave of memes, jokes, and criticism. Many focused on the age discrepancy in Trump’s caption, while others pointed out that his photograph showed him wearing a military academy uniform despite the fact that he never served in the U.S. military. Trump attended the New York Military Academy as a teenager after being enrolled by his parents but later received multiple draft deferments during the Vietnam War era, including one for bone spurs.
The Obama photograph showed the future president as an 18-year-old college student and included a cigarette, reflecting a habit Obama has publicly acknowledged and discussed quitting during his political career.
The social media discussion expanded beyond the original comparison, with many users creating their own side-by-side images featuring Trump and Obama at different stages of their lives. Some of those posts contrasted Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign with Trump during his business career, generating additional online debate.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the post or the criticism that followed.
Trump has frequently referenced Obama throughout his political career, often criticizing his predecessor’s policies and legacy. Obama recently addressed those repeated references during an appearance on the All the Smoke podcast, joking that he appears to occupy “a suite” in Trump’s head and suggesting that Trump’s continued focus on him was unusual.
The latest social media exchange underscores the long-running political rivalry between the two presidents, whose public criticism of one another has continued years after they each left their first terms in office.
