Trump Diverges from McCarthy, Urges GOP to Force Government Shutdown

The path for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to prevent a government shutdown has become thornier. This comes after former President Donald Trump voiced his support for the approach of staunch House Republicans. These members lean towards a funding halt rather than finding middle ground with the Democrat-controlled Senate and White House.

Trump, currently leading the pack for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination and a previous supporter of McCarthy for the speaker role, expressed his views on his social media channel.

Trump stated, “The Republicans faced a significant setback on the Debt Ceiling, gained NOTHING, and now fear they’ll bear the brunt for the Budget Shutdown. Incorrect! The sitting President will always face the blame,” He further emphasized, “UNLESS YOU SECURE EVERYTHING, BRING IT TO A HALT! Seal the Border, halt the Misuse of ‘Justice,’ and Prevent Election Meddling.”
