Trump and Mike Johnson Hold Meeting at Mar-a-Lago

Speaker Mike Johnson recently had a private meeting with former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, according to a knowledgeable source who spoke with The Hill. The occasion for Johnson’s visit was a fundraising event for Congressman Gus Bilirakis, a Republican from Florida. This encounter marked the first direct communication between Johnson and Trump since Johnson assumed the role of Speaker in late October.

The relationship between Trump and Johnson has been notably positive. Only a week ago, Johnson publicly declared his full support for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. Speaking on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Johnson enthusiastically endorsed Trump, praising his economic policies and the remarkable economic achievements during his first two years in office, which Johnson described as unparalleled in both national and global history.

Back in 2020, Johnson was a prominent figure advocating for a controversial legal stance to challenge President Biden’s electoral victory. This stance aligned with Trump’s unfounded allegations of election fraud. Following Johnson’s election as Speaker, Trump affectionately dubbed him “MAGA Mike.” Trump’s support played a crucial role in Johnson’s ascendancy to the Speaker’s position, especially after the removal of Kevin McCarthy from California as a Republican contender. Despite initially supporting Representative Jim Jordan from Ohio for the role, Trump shifted his backing to Johnson after Jordan struggled to gain sufficient backing within the House GOP conference.
