Trump Mistakenly Refers to Pelosi as Haley in Discussion About January 6th Events
At a recent rally in New Hampshire, former President Donald Trump seemed to confuse Nikki Haley, the former U.N. ambassador, with Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) while discussing the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Addressing a large crowd in Concord, N.H., Trump commented on the size of the gathering and compared it to smaller crowds he claimed Haley typically attracts. He then unexpectedly mentioned Haley in relation to the January 6 events, making baseless allegations about the destruction of evidence and claiming, incorrectly, that Haley was responsible for security that day. This appeared to be a mix-up, as Pelosi, not Haley, was more directly connected to the Capitol during the riot.
Pelosi’s office has previously refuted claims that she was responsible for the Capitol’s security on the day of the attack. Her spokesperson, Drew Hammill, clarified to The Associated Press in July 2021 that Pelosi, like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, was not in charge of Capitol security on January 6th. Hammill described such claims as attempts to distort the truth of that day’s events. It’s important to note that the National Guard is not under the directive of the House Speaker.
Footage from the House select committee hearings investigating the January 6 insurrection showed Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) actively engaging with Cabinet members and governors during the Capitol attack.
In response to Trump’s remarks, President Biden’s campaign humorously highlighted the mix-up on X, formerly known as Twitter, playfully pointing out Trump’s confusion between Pelosi and Haley regarding the events of January 6th.
