Schumer Urges Appeal of Trump Docs Case Dismissal
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) criticized Judge Aileen Cannon’s decision to dismiss felony charges against former President Trump, describing the ruling as “breathtakingly misguided” and demanding an immediate appeal.
“Such a ruling contradicts established practices and previous judicial decisions,” Schumer remarked in a statement following the dismissal.
He argued that the ruling was legally flawed and insisted on an immediate appeal. Schumer also suggested that Judge Cannon, who was appointed by Trump, is not impartial and should be reassigned.
Judge Cannon, in her ruling, stated that the appointment of Special Counsel Jack Smith to oversee the case was unconstitutional. She concluded that no law allows the attorney general to assign such extensive prosecutorial powers to a special counsel as those given to Smith.
Trump was facing 40 charges related to the mishandling of classified documents and obstructing their retrieval after his presidency.
The decision coincided with the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
Senator Mike Lee (Utah), a conservative Republican on the Judiciary Committee, praised the ruling, calling it “good news for America and bad news for the misuse of our judicial system,” in a post on the social platform X.
