Belgium’s national men’s soccer team mocks Trump

Belgium’s national men’s soccer team appeared to mock President Trump after eliminating the United States from the World Cup with a 4-1 victory on Monday night.

Following the team’s fourth and final goal in Seattle, several Belgian players celebrated near the goal line by performing the now widely recognized “Trump dance” as disappointed American fans began leaving the stadium. After the match, video shared by Belgian media showed players repeating the dance in the locker room while celebrating the win.

The celebration came one day after FIFA reversed a red card issued to U.S. striker Folarin Balogun, allowing him to play against Belgium. The decision followed a phone call from Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino requesting that the play be reviewed. While FIFA has said the disciplinary panel made its decision independently, the reversal drew criticism from several figures in international soccer, including members of the Belgian team, who described the decision as surprising.

Before kickoff on Monday, Trump said Belgium would deserve to win if it played the better match, while adding that he believed both teams should have their top players available. Despite Balogun’s return to the lineup, Belgium advanced comfortably with the 4-1 victory and will now face Spain in the quarterfinals on Friday in Los Angeles.
