Chris Christie Mocks Trump With Bad News

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is predicting a difficult election cycle for Republicans, saying he believes the GOP is headed for a “monumental defeat” in the 2026 midterm elections that could trigger a major debate about the party’s future.

Christie made the remarks during a podcast interview after being asked whether Republican voters are willing to hear criticism of President Donald Trump. Christie said many Republicans may not be receptive now, but argued that election losses often force parties to reconsider their direction.

“I think we’re on our way to a monumental defeat as a party in the 2026 midterms,” Christie said, adding that a poor showing in November could lead Republicans to rethink the ideas and leadership that contributed to the losses.

Christie entered the 2024 Republican presidential primary as one of Trump’s most outspoken critics before ending his campaign shortly before the Iowa caucuses. Throughout the race, he positioned himself as an alternative to Trump but struggled to gain traction with Republican voters and was frequently booed at conservative events.

Since leaving the race, Christie has continued criticizing Trump, previously describing the president as “undisciplined, immature and narcissistic” while urging Republicans to hold him accountable.

Looking ahead to the midterms, Christie predicted Democrats would regain control of the House and suggested they have a stronger-than-expected opportunity to compete for the Senate, pointing to the Texas Senate race as one to watch.

Despite his outlook, Christie acknowledged that any shift within the Republican Party would likely take time, arguing that meaningful political change typically happens over multiple election cycles rather than overnight.
