Code Red Issued After Trump 250 Celebrations

The massive fireworks display celebrating America’s 250th birthday on the National Mall was followed by a “Code Red” air quality alert across the Washington, D.C., region on Sunday.

The alert was issued hours after the record-setting Independence Day fireworks concluded, with officials warning that air quality had reached unhealthy levels for sensitive groups, including children, older adults and people with respiratory or other medical conditions. Residents in affected areas were advised to limit outdoor activity while the alert remained in effect.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments said the Code Red designation covered Washington, D.C., along with Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Fairfax County, Prince William County, Loudoun County, Manassas and Manassas Park. Forecasters had initially warned that conditions could even reach a more severe Code Purple level because of the unusually large fireworks display.

Medical experts said fireworks release large amounts of fine particulate matter that can travel deep into the lungs. They noted that these particles may contain heavy metals and can pose added risks for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions. Doctors advised those with breathing issues to keep rescue inhalers readily available if needed.

Officials also warned that the region’s intense heat could cause poor air quality to linger longer than usual. By Monday morning, however, air quality across Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and the surrounding suburbs had improved to the “moderate” category.

The National Mall fireworks show, promoted by the Trump-backed Freedom 250 organization as the world’s largest display, featured approximately 850,000 fireworks. The celebration began shortly before midnight after severe weather forced organizers to temporarily evacuate attendees and delay the event.
